What Is a Yeast Infection?
A yeast infection, also called candidiasis, is caused by microscopic fungi or yeast which live naturally on our skin and in the large intestine. The fungi and yeast are forms of candida, the most common being candida albicans. You may not know you have a problem until the candida yeast become so numerous that symptoms show up. Some studies show that 80-90% of people living in the United States have a yeast infection. It is a similar percentage in more developed countries.
Vaginal yeast infections are well-known, and come with redness, itching, pain and a discharge.
But men, women and children can all suffer from the unbearable burning and itching of a yeast infection. Men can get a yeast infection on and around the penis. Yeast infection is a common form of diaper rash. Everyone – men, women and children can also have a yeast infection on the surface of the skin. Thrush is a candida infection of the mouth, which is painful and has white curd-like spots.
Candida infections also grow in moist, warm areas of the body such as underarms and skin folds. The nail beds are another place where yeast can grow.
Unfortunately, candidiasis is often misdiagnosed.Sometimes this can be dangerous. If it isn’t treated the yeast infection can spread and become a dangerous systemic infection. The yeast infection is likely to become chronic.
